Why titles are overrated

Leadership is not a popularity contest, but neither is it a shouting match. Too many managers still lean on the three Roman pillars of power: imperium (command through fear), potestas (command through title), and auctoritas (command through past glories). We modernise the names—KPIs, org charts, LinkedIn trophies—but the dynamic is the same: ego on a pedestal, team in the shadows.

Fear-based imperium sparks compliance, never commitment. Title-heavy potestas breeds hierarchy, not initiative. And nostalgia-driven auctoritas locks the organisation to yesterday’s victories. Each looks strong from the outside yet weakens performance from within.

 

Erase the bio, amplify the team
Conscious leaders flip the script. Instead of reinforcing authority, they cultivate individual responsibility:

  1. Facilitate, don’t dictate.
    Start every decision with “What do you think?” Your role is traffic controller, not traffic cop.

  2. Tell the story—without starring in it.
    Use anecdotes to illuminate the path, but scrub out the “I.” When the protagonist is the principle, listeners imagine themselves in the hero’s seat.

  3. Be strategically scarce in social moments.
    Show up at the coffee machine, then let the room breathe. Presence matters; omnipresence suffocates.

  4. Trust first, verify later.
    Replace micromanagement with clear goals and open dashboards. Accountability follows autonomy.

  5. Share only what serves the mission.
    Titles, trophies, and war stories belong in job interviews, not daily stand-ups. The less attention you place on your résumé, the more oxygen your people have to build theirs.

 

Handling the edge cases
Yes, a promotion panel may require your track record. Yes, context sometimes demands a war story. But make those exceptions rare and purposeful. Your past is a tool, not a throne.

Delete your personal history.
Lead conversations toward vision, values, and action—not your own narrative. Authority earned in the present is lighter, faster, and far more contagious than any authority inherited from the past.

When leaders become facilitators rather than protagonists, teams rise. And when teams rise, results speak louder than résumés—every time.
